Obesity patients soar 60% in a year

THE number of people ending up in hospital because they are too fat has soared by 60 per cent in just one year, it was revealed yesterday.
And in the past five years the numbers needing care because they are dangerously overweight has more than quadrupled.
The figures include treatment for breathing problems, Type 2 diabetes, circulation problems, organ failure or heart disease which doctors say was caused by being overweight.
People admitted for weight-loss surgery such as stomach stapling are also included in the how to calculate bmi data from the NHS Information Centre.
The numbers having such surgery has risen since rationing watchdog NICE said patients should be offered it on the NHS as a last resort.
There were 8,085 admissions for obesity in 2008/09 in England – up from 5,056 in 2007/08 and a 360 per cent rise on 2003/04 (1,746).
Overall, there were 14.2million hospital admissions in 2008/09, a 5 per cent increase on 2007/08 (13.5million) and a 20 per cent increase on 2003/04 (11.8million). There were over five million emergency admissions, 5 per cent up on 2007/08 (4.8million).
Tam Fry, of the National Obesity Forum, said: ‘The obesity problem is like a tsunami…and we are going to see more and more people in hospital.’
Fifteen Vendors Seek NCQA Software Certification(SM) for 2010

The National Committee for Quality Assurance
(NCQA) announced today that 15 vendors will seek certification for software
related to the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS)
and Integrated Healthcare Association’s (IHA) California Pay for
Performance (P4P) measurement sets. Such software programs collect relevant
data from health plan databases and calculate rates for health care
measures that assess the quality of service and care.
NCQA validates vendors’ software by generating test data sets. Vendors
process the test sets and compare their output to the expected results to
determine whether their software computes results in accordance with NCQA
specifications. Vendors who achieve certification are exempt from manual
source code review by NCQA Compliance Auditors during an NCQA HEDIS
Compliance Audit and P4P Audit Review.
This year’s Software Certification includes one new performance measure –
Immunization for Adolescents — which was added to the HEDIS 2010
measurement set.

This is an exciting time in the treatment of psoriasis. We are fortunate to be able to offer our patients an array of new and more efficacious therapies that range from targeted biologics to novel topicals.
